So, when I get back to my village- I will make it happen.
Today began with a quick run over to the post office to tell them that we have a huge order of meats coming in but we will not be around to pick them up. I was a little nervous about their response being,"Sorry, we don't have a solution for your problem," since there isn't a freezer inside. Instead we heard, "Sure, don't worry about it!" So that made our day:)
After that we lined up at the dock outside of my apartment to get on the boat, to get on the plane, to register for our D.O. inservice. I was excited to go, not b/c of the inservice, but b/c this is the first time that all of us newbies got together after being separated for three days in our villages... and you just know that there are going to be some GOOD stories.
For example, arriving in town and being invited to a throwing party. This is a traditional Yupik event and you can read about it here: http://tunt.blogspot.com/2005/09/36-fresh-start-wthrow-party.html. She didn't score any loot but was definitely fascinated by this get together of community members.
Another was given a leg off of a reindeer to make meals out of, and she, for the first time, took it home and with this tool:
cut it up it to manageable pieces.... all by herself.
While another looked in her fridge and was greeted by a piece of meat, but with fur still on it, and not the moldy kind.
More?
Four-wheeling to pick berries for the first time only to be thrown off and land in the tundra "mud" that is very difficult to get out of.
Find your apartment and note that it looks great and then being told that the running water may be installed by the end of the month.
It has been good to hear these stories, laugh together, and know that as the year progresses there will be more to share:)
